Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra 2017's international tour concluded at Music Center at Strathmore near Washington, DC.

Symphony Tour in North America: Photos from Behind the Scenes

  • A week after leaving the tropical island of Taiwan, Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra started its North America tour in Toronto.
  • One of Canada's premier concert halls, Roy Thomson Hall features a pipe organ and special sloping architecture. This is the Symphony's fourth year performing here.
  • Rehearsal time in a soon-to-be-filled Roy Thomson Hall. This grand venue accommodates up to 2,630 guests.
  • Cellist Alexander Dardykin grabs a precious opportunity to practice on stage.
  • Mighty instruments, mighty musicians. Hui-Ching Chen and the double bass section.
  • Music not only brings joy to our audience, but also to our own musicians. Pictured: principal bassist Juraj Kukan.
  • Conductor Milen Nachev leads rehearsal at Roy Thomson Hall.
  • Principal violist Vardan Petrosyan and assistant principal violist Rachel Chen hold an impromptu sectional after rehearsal.
  • Built in 1900, Boston Symphony Hall remains one of the world's top concert halls.
  • Boston Symphony Hall is renowned for its impressive acoustics and architecture. Can you spot the 16 replicas of Greco-Roman statues along the walls?
  • This Aeolian-Skinner organ is one of Boston Symphony Hall's most prominent features. Installed in 1949, the instrument is considered one of the finest concert hall organs in the world.
  • More fine-tuning for a perfect concert.
  • Before opening night at Carnegie Hall, erhu soloist Lu Sun takes a quiet moment to warm up.
  • This is Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra's sixth consecutive year at Carnegie.
  • Principal bassist Juraj Kukan (R) and bassist Wei Liu wait to be reunited with their instruments on stage—cellist James Zheng doesn't need to wait.
  • Behind the stage at Carnegie, principal trombonist Alexander Moraru (L) and trombonist Alistair Crawford warm up together with long tones.
  • Principal flutist Chia-Jung Lee prepares her flute for the concert.
  • Pipa player Yuru Chen spending quality time with her instrument.
  • The pipa, or Chinese lute, is known as the
  • What Carnegie Hall looks like from the point of view of a double bassist.
  • A week later, in DC, we took a moment to enjoy the crisp morning air before entering the concert hall.
  • Then, fully invigorated, we arrived at the Music Center at Strathmore for our 2017 season finale.
  • Seeing as it was our first time at the venue, conductor Milen Nachev paused rehearsal to take a snapshot of the gorgeous hall.
  • Everyone in good cheer, and ready for the final concert of the season.
  • These instruments may be small, but the sound they produce is amazingly resonant. Percussionists Tiffany Yu and Jazmine Jia.
  • Princi-pals: principal musicians and buddies Alexander Moraru (L) and Juraj Kukan pose for a shot.
  • Trumpet players Kaspar Martig (L) and Jimmy Geiger stay behind after rehearsal for more practice.
  • It's been a great symphony tour and we'll miss playing all our pieces. The Light Calvary Overture by Suppe was a favorite among our musicians.
  • The woodwind section takes a group photo memento to celebrate. Until next year!
  • After a 14-stop tour of Asia, Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra returned to top North American venues for part two of the 2017 concert tour. We played in Toronto, Boston, and Washington, DC, and revisited Carnegie Hall for the sixth year running.

It's been a spectacular season. We saw sparkling concert halls with remarkable history, performed for wonderful audiences, and enjoyed some comfy couches backstage, too. Here, we take you behind the scenes, from setup to chill out to full on.

By the way, our musicians are now back and preparing for the all-new Shen Yun 2018. We'll be seeing you soon!
