Shen Yun Reviews: Director of Symphony Orchestra: Shen Yun ‘Educates People in Beauty’
TAOYUAN, Taiwan—ShenYun is touring Taiwan for the fifth year and the ShenYun International Company has just completed its first five performances in Taoyuan City. The curtain of the last show closed on March 15 to the audience’s enthusiastic applause. The Performance Center was abuzz, and even after the stage lights shut off, many in the audience lingered, talking about the show, and taking pictures in front of the ShenYun posters.
Mr. Lin Junji, the executive director of the Taiwan Band Association, also remained for some time after the show. He said, “The performance was a success ... It's an outstanding performance.” In his capacity as executive director working for music promotion and education, Mr. Lin had deep feelings for the profound meaning and morals conveyed in the performance.
Mr. Lin has a double Masters degree in music and art from National Taiwan Normal University. He is the executive director of the Taiwan Band Association, as well as the artistic director of Jiyin Symphony Orchestra, the artistic director of several other orchestras, and a teacher. He said, “[ShenYun] is very professional. They are professional in all areas.”
Mr. Lin said that ShenYun “educates people in beauty.” He explained that the art is for pursuing truthfulness, compassion, and beauty. He said the basic effect of art is first to stir people’s emotions, then to purify people’s minds. “If there’s not the first step, however, there won’t be the next.” “One must slowly elevate from the feelings of the body to the mind, and then get closer and closer to the so-called grand way, the Truth, that is, combining oneself to the divine. I think that it [ShenYun] achieves this point.”
“ShenYun educates and. I mean it, really! It can enhance the audience’s soul.” Mr. Lin said in a slowly and with sincerity, “From the choreography, music, and dance, it purifies peoples’ hearts imperceptibly, because the human body is a kind of beauty, dancing is a kind of beauty, rhythm is a kind of beauty, and vision is also a kind of beauty.”
“[ShenYun] really has the effect of giving the audience peace of mind. The vocal soloists especially uplift your spirit.” Sometimes closing his eyes to recollect, sometimes looking into the distance, Mr. Lin continued explaining his observations. He said that the meaning behind the dancing and music was implied, but when the soprano, tenor, and baritone were singing, the concrete lyrics gave the audience direct and profound feelings. He said the lyrics elevate the audience's mood and spirit “higher and higher to a more concrete realm, because I really think that the lyrics are very well written.”
“Life is like this. People come to the world and should fulfill their own responsibilities, carrying out their duties,” Mr. Lin said. However, ShenYun helps him to deeply reflect on his life.
Mr. Lin said that he observed the colors, and the movements of the dancers very closely. “Because I myself am an artist, I would like to see more art forms. Thus, I come with mindset: to enjoy the show, as well as to learn more about its advantages.” He said the effects of ShenYun’s art design, composition, orchestra, and the backdrops were very good, and that ShenYun inspires creativity in his own musical creations.
As the audience gradually left the hall, Mr. Lin happily summed up his experience: “It was a great benefit for both body and mind!”
