Jiwu Wang took up the Chinese bamboo flute in 1960, when he was nine years old. He served for several years as a soloist with one of the Chinese army’s orchestras in Wuhan Military Zone, a group that consisted entirely of traditional Chinese instruments. Later he became a soloist with the Tian Yin Orchestra in New York.
